The UEFA Champions League is once again back in our lives this week and we have a whole host of exciting fixtures to consume over the course of the next few days – as you’d expect from a competition with this level of prestige. Today, we’re going to take a look at one of the two Group B meetings that’ll be taking place as AC Milan of Serie A go to war with Atletico Madrid of La Liga in what’s fondly known as the Group of Death.

AC Milan

After coming close to winning the title in Italy last season it seems as if AC Milan have come back with an even greater determination to make waves at the top of the table. From their experienced veterans to their crop of youngsters coming up through the ranks, there are so many reasons to get excited about what this Milan side has to offer. They took Liverpool to the limit and now, they’ll want to push that one step further.

Team News

Bakayoko, Krunic, Florenzi and Ibrahimovic are all out through injury with the latter not returning until after the international break – whereas Kjaer is also considered to be a fitness doubt.

Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid are one of many clubs going through the motions in La Liga right now and while they’ve only lost one of their opening seven league games, they’ve also only won four of them – which by their standards just goes to show how competitive it is up there. They’ve always been seen as a defensive team within the Simeone era but in this campaign, they need to start finding the back of the net if they’re going to hold on to their domestic crown.

Team News

Thomas Lemar is out due to injury but there are no other concerns in that department for the visitors. However, they do have to deal with Savic being unavailable due to suspension.

Factors to Consider

  • AC Milan lost to Liverpool 3-2 in the opening round whereas Atletico drew 0-0 with Porto.
  • AC Milan have won four, drawn one and lost one of their last six games.
  • Atletico have won two, drawn three and lost one of their last six games.
  • AC Milan have scored 13 goals and conceded six in their last six games.
  • Atletico have scored six goals and conceded five in their last six games.

Conclusion

A Group of Death, by default, can lead to an awful lot of unpredictability – and a lot of close games, too. We expect to see that here with Atletico being tight at the back and Milan being unable to break them down for long spells, also leaving themselves vulnerable to the counter in the process. Both teams are more than capable of qualifying in the top two and we picture them taking a small step towards doing just that with a 1-1 draw.

Prediction: Draw
