Belgium will be hoping to continue their flawless start to Euro 2020 qualifying on Tuesday evening as they take on Scotland.

The two teams come together at the King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels as each looks to take a huge step towards qualification.

Belgium

Since taking over as Belgium manager in August 2016, it is fair to say that Spaniard Roberto Martinez has had a wonderful impact on the team. Despite losing his first game in charge, the Red Devils have only suffered two more losses in all competitions since then with their last coming in November 2018 in a 5-2 defeat to Switzerland in the UEFA Nations League. Since then, the team have got back on song with three consecutive wins, meaning that they have started their campaign for the Euro 2020 tournament in the best possible way. As a consequence, it now looks extremely likely that they will reach the tournament itself. Should they qualify, it will only be the second time in the nation’s history that they have managed to qualify for two consecutive European Championships.

One aspect that could be extremely positive for the Belgian’s during the current campaign is their confidence in front of goal. As a matter of fact, they have only failed to score in three games under Martinez in all the time he has been in control of the team.

Team News

Martinez has a fully fit squad to choose from for the game. A handful of Premier League players will represent a large part of the squad, with the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku likely to start. Eden Hazard, who is set to move from Chelsea to Real Madrid will once again captain the squad.

Scotland

Whilst Belgium will be aiming to reach their second consecutive European Championships next year, Steve Clarke’s Scotland will be striving to make their first appearance at the tournament since 1996. They have had a positive start to qualifying in which to do that. Having played three games so far, they have managed to collect two victories and one defeat. The most recent win, a 2-1 success over Cyprus, came in Clarke’s first match in charge. The only blemish on Scotland’s recent record is their 3-0 humbling to Kazakhstan right at the start of the qualification campaign. Although, following two consecutive victories they now do have a great opportunity to make it three European Championship qualification wins for the first time since 2007.

Team News

Liverpool defender Andrew Robertson is once again set to captain the Scotland side. Meanwhile, uncapped trio Greg Taylor, Stuart Findlay and Liam Kelly will all be looking to make their international debuts.

Key Facts To Consider

  • Belgium have by far the better all-time record between the two sides (W11, D3, L4)
  • The Red Devils have won the last four games between the teams without conceding a goal
  • The teams last met in September 2018, with Belgium running out 4-0 winners
  • Roberto Martinez has only ever lost one game at home with the Belgian national team
  • Scotland could go second in their qualifying group with a victory

Conclusion

This match is arguably the most testing for the Scots during the qualification campaign. They come up against a hugely talented and gifted Belgium side. Roberto Martinez’s troops are also in eye-catching form so could cause plenty of problems. Despite Scotland’s positive start to qualifying, they will fall to defeat here.

Prediction: Belgium to win to nil

Odds: 4/6
