It may not have garnered as much attention as the two competitions above it, but the UEFA Europa Conference League has turned out to be an entertaining third tier of the European football structure this season. There are clubs across the continent that have been able to shine bright with two of them, Feyenoord and Marseille, competing in what should be a fascinating semi-final first leg this week.

Feyenoord

At this moment in time Feyenoord are sat in third place in Eredivisie with their intention being to hold off Twente and qualify for Europe again next season. Of course, they also need to look toward the Conference League as a real opportunity for them to take home a piece of silverware. Given the attacking talent they’ve got in their ranks, it shouldn’t be ruled out.

Team News

Til, Jahanbakhsh, Toornstra and Bijlow are all out through injury with Senesi also being tipped to miss out. Elsewhere, Arsenal loanee Nelson is expected to feature.

Marseille

Marseille are the second best team in France behind Paris Saint-Germain and outside of a loss to their rivals, they’ve been fairly unstoppable across the last couple of months. They look hungrier than they have done in a long time and when their best starting XI is fit and available, they’re a scary team to face – and may well be the dark horses to go all the way and lift this trophy.

Team News

Payet will lead the line for Marseille after a strong campaign with Balerdi, Under and Henrique all missing. his game. However, a potential Dieng return could give them a real boost.

Factors to Consider

  • Marseille are currently listed as second favourites to win the Conference League with bookmakers.
  • Feyenoord have won four and drawn two of their last six games.
  • Marseille have won five and lost one of their last six games.
  • Feyenoord have scored 17 goals and conceded nine in their last six games.
  • Marseille have scored 10 goals and conceded five in their last six games.

Conclusion

While Feyenoord may have the home advantage, we just don’t think they’ll have enough in them to stop Marseille from winning the first leg. We expect to see the French side push them back at will and keep things relatively tight at the back, and while the hosts will get off their fair share of chances, the visitors will come away with a comfortable 2-0 lead to take into the second leg.

Prediction: Marseille win

Best Odds: 11/5
