France and Uruguay will both be aiming to get back to winning ways on Tuesday night as they clash in Paris.

The World champions will aim to rectify their performance in the 2-0 defeat to the Netherlands at the weekend as they host Oscar Tabarez’s troops.

France

For the first time since winning the World Cup in Russia during the summer, France fell to defeat at the weekend. As they clashed with the Netherlands in Rotterdam in UEFA Nations League action, a poor performance saw Didier Deschamps’ men condemned to defeat, with a strike from Georginio Wijnaldum and a late Memphis Depay penalty securing the three points for the hosts. The loss was the first time that the French had tasted defeat since a 3-2 loss to Colombia in an international friendly back in March 2018. As a matter of fact, Les Bleus have not experienced back-to-back losses since June 2015.

Despite that, the World Cup winners are on an excellent run on home soil. Their last defeat was that loss to Colombia. Before that, it was a 2-0 defeat to Spain in 2015. This means that France have only lost two out of their last 23 games at the Stade de France. Their last match at home was a fantastic 2-1 win over Joachim Low’s Germany.

Team News

The French side is already missing numerous big names for the clash with Uruguay. Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial, Alexandre Lacazette, Samuel Umtiti, Lucas Hernandez and Benjamin Mendy are all already ruled out through injury. As a result, Mamadou Sakho, Djibril Sidibe and Moussa Sissoko could all be drafted into the side.

Uruguay

The visitors, meanwhile, do not come into this clash in the greatest of form. They lost their last game 1-0 to South American rivals Brazil as the two clashed at the Emirates Stadium. A penalty from Neymar was enough to condemn Uruguay to defeat. That loss made it three losses in a row for the team, following a 4-3 defeat to Japan before a 2-1 defeat to the Korean Republic. The Uruguayans have only lost four consecutive games once in 20 years but that came recently between 2016 and 2017.

One aspect that has troubled Uruguay especially in recent years is their form on their travels. They have only won approximately a quarter of their last twenty games in all competitions away from home, something they will surely have to rectify should they hope to get a result in France. Their defence has also not been particularly positive having conceded on average two goals a game away from home in their last four games since the World Cup.

Team News

Uruguay have an injury-free squad for the trip to France. Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani are sure to lead the attack for the visitors. Current Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira will hope to continue his positive form.

Key Facts To Consider

  • The two teams have an even record coming into the game (W2, D4, L2)
  • France won the last clash between the two 2-0 at the FIFA World Cup
  • Uruguay have only scored twice in eight games against France
  • Uruguay have never won away in France
  • The most popular scoreline between the two sides has been 0-0 having occurred on four occasions

Conclusion

Whilst history would not point to a thriller being produced at the Stade de France, supporters could well be in for a fascinating game of football. The hosts will hope to capitalise on Uruguay’s poor form to get back to winning ways and they should do that with ease considering the visitors’ poor defensive record recently.
