The Premier League is back with a brand new attitude this weekend, as the majority of teams come back from a busy midweek that included a League Cup encounter. Now, though, it’s time to focus on the important stuff, with some big games being set to go down in European football’s top division. One such encounter will take place between two clubs who appear to be heading in opposite directions this season: Huddersfield Town and Tottenham Hotspur, which should only serve to increase the stakes.

Huddersfield

The Terriers have already exceeded all expectations by remaining in the Premier League, but it certainly does feel like their time in the top flight could be coming to an end once we reach May. They just don’t seem to have the tools necessary to compete at this level consistently anymore, and while that’s a harsh thing to say so early on in the season, it appears to be true. If they can keep within touching distance by the time January rolls around, perhaps a great transfer window can help to drag them out of the mess they’re in.

Team News

Ramadan Sobhi is still out courtesy of a knee injury, with Juninho Bacuna and Collin Quaner both attempting to battle their way into the starting XI as Wagner tries to mix things up.

Tottenham

Tottenham went through the definition of a blip recently with three straight defeats, but it feels like they’re starting to come out of it with a bit more confidence. They almost certainly need to strengthen in January if they want to compete with the top four, especially if they pick up any more injuries, but their current squad is more than capable of keeping the pace with the big boys until then. Pochettino has certainly had to deal with some criticism, but now, it’s his turn to make a real statement.

Team News

Paulo Gazzaniga could start once again for Spurs, whereas Serge Aurier will be examined ahead of the game after picking up a midweek injury.

Factors to Consider

  • The game will be played at Huddersfield’s John Smith’s Stadium.
  • Huddersfield lead Tottenham in the overall head to head standings 16-13, with 13 draws.
  • In their last meeting, Tottenham beat Huddersfield 2-0.
  • Huddersfield have drawn two and lost four of their last six games.
  • Tottenham have won two, drawn one and lost three of their last six games.

Conclusion

When you back a struggling team into a corner, especially in the Premier League, there’s always the risk of them biting back in a big way. Alas, we can’t quite see Huddersfield making too many waves at this early stage of the season and if they’re going to ‘bite back’, then it’ll likely come somewhere down the road. Tottenham have had their issues this year and they’ve been well documented, but we still think they should have more than enough to grind out a convincing 2-0 away victory up in Yorkshire.
