After more than four years of waiting, we’ve finally arrived at the return of the FIFA World Cup. The greatest sporting spectacle on the planet will take place in Qatar and while there are so, so many reasons why that shouldn’t be happening, common sense hasn’t been able to prevail. Alas, we’re still expecting to see some great football, as will be the case when Group A table-toppers Netherlands and Ecuador collide.

Netherlands

The Netherlands know that their attacking options aren’t quite as potent as they once were. At the same time, they managed to overcome a tough test against Senegal, largely due to their resilience late in the game. They have what it takes to slowly but surely make their way through to the later stages of this tournament and based on the early evidence, we’d say that’s where the smart money is in this group.

Team News

Depay and de Roon are both still fitness concerns despite coming off the bench in the win over the African champions.

Ecuador

Ecuador had a tough test in front of them on the opening night of the tournament as they had to go head to head with hosts Qatar. Alas, despite a few bizarre decisions going against them, they were able to persevere and secure the three points. They are going to be a tough, tough team to beat for the next couple of weeks, and it’ll be interesting to see how far this momentum can take them.

Team News

Valencia is a doubt after scoring a brace in the opener before coming off injured, with Estrada potentially taking over as the sole striker.

Factors to Consider

  • Ecuador have never beaten Netherlands in international football.
  • Netherlands have won five and drawn one of their last six games.
  • Ecuador have won two and drawn four of their last six games.
  • Netherlands have scored 12 goals and conceded five in their last six games.
  • Ecuador have scored three goals and conceded zero in their last six games.

Conclusion

The defensive strength of both sides, and Ecuador in particular, is going to play a huge role in how things shape up in this encounter. We expect a nervy affair in the opening half hour or so with the Dutch managing to edge in front just before half time, not wanting the same dilemma they had in their opener. They’ll edge out a one-goal victory, but Ecuador will still be able to take some confidence heading into their last game.

Prediction: Netherlands win

Best Odds: 3/4
