Prediction: Real Madrid vs Benfica

Real Madrid return to the Santiago Bernabéu on Wednesday evening aiming to protect a narrow advantage in their Champions League knockout round playoff.

Los Blancos carry a 1–0 lead into the second leg thanks to Vinícius Júnior’s strike in Lisbon, though the fallout from that match has ensured this tie remains fraught with additional tension.

Real Madrid

Last week’s first‑leg scoreline tells only part of the story. Vinícius netted the decisive goal shortly after the break, but moments later accused Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni of racially abusing him. The alleged incident prompted a 10‑minute stoppage, dominated post‑match discussion, and remains under active UEFA investigation.

Alvaro Arbeloa will closely assess Vinícius’s state of mind before confirming his starting lineup, though all indications point to the Brazilian featuring from the outset. The forward is expected to channel his focus towards helping Madrid finish the job and reach the last 16.

Madrid do, however, enter Wednesday’s clash on the back of a disappointing 2–1 defeat to Osasuna, a setback that dropped them to second in La Liga. A significant improvement will be required if they are to avoid being punished by a Benfica side with nothing to lose.

Recent history is at least favourable: Los Blancos have won five of their last six matches against Portuguese opposition. Should they progress, a two‑legged meeting with either Sporting Lisbon or Manchester City would await in the round of 16.

Team News

Vinícius is set to start and will be seeking his fifth consecutive goal across all competitions. Rodrygo remains unavailable, serving the second match of his UEFA suspension while also recovering from a hamstring problem. Jude Bellingham (hamstring), Éder Militão (hamstring) and Dani Ceballos (calf) are all sidelined.

Dean Huijsen missed the Osasuna match with a muscular complaint and is a significant doubt for the second leg. Arbeloa is expected to deploy his now‑familiar narrow midfield shape, with Federico Valverde and Arda Güler operating in the wide interior roles. Up front, Vinícius should partner Kylian Mbappé.

Benfica

Benfica restored some domestic confidence on Saturday with a routine 3–0 league win over AFS, but manager José Mourinho will not be present on the touchline at the Bernabéu. The Portuguese coach was dismissed during the first leg and must serve a touchline ban.

Remarkably, Benfica hold the edge in the historical head‑to‑head, having beaten Madrid three times and lost twice—including their memorable 5–3 victory in the 1962 European Cup final. Yet recent meetings with Spanish clubs have been far less encouraging. They have been defeated in six of their last eight encounters with La Liga opposition, including home and away losses to Barcelona in last season’s round of 16.

Their away record in Spain paints an equally daunting picture: only two wins from 14 matches on Spanish soil, reinforcing the size of the challenge on Wednesday night.

There are, however, signs of resilience. Benfica have triumphed in eight of their last 11 two‑legged European ties. The problem? Real Madrid have progressed in 22 of their last 23 ties after winning the first leg—an extraordinary record Benfica must now attempt to overturn.

Team News

Gianluca Prestianni has been suspended by UEFA while the racial‑abuse investigation continues, ruling him out of the trip to Madrid. João Veloso remains unavailable due to a shoulder injury, but Benfica otherwise have a fully fit squad.

Dodi Lukebakio could be brought into the starting XI on the flank, while Richard Ríos may be handed a midfield role. Vangelis Pavlidis—enjoying a superb season with 28 goals in all competitions—will spearhead the attack once again.

Conclusion

Benfica face a monumental task as they head to the Bernabéu needing to overturn a deficit against a Real Madrid side rarely beaten in such scenarios. They will push hard, and Madrid’s current form is far from perfect, but the Spanish giants’ experience in decisive European fixtures remains a significant advantage.

Quite apart from that, the atmosphere in the Spanish capital will likely be hostile for the Portuguese side, given everything that happened in Lisbon.

Even without being at their fluent best, Los Blancos should possess enough composure, quality and Champions League know‑how to secure their passage into the last 16.

Verdict: Home win
