The German Bundesliga is back in action this weekend as we approach the final five-game stretch of the league campaign. There’s still an awful lot to be decided at both ends of the table and given the quality on show in the top flight, that’s hardly surprising. Today, we’ll be taking a look at a collision between two top six teams with a lot to prove as Union Berlin go head to head with Bayer Leverkusen.

Union Berlin

It’s been something of a dream season for Union Berlin up to this point as they’ve reintroduced themselves as one of the dominant forces across all of German football. Their push for the title is still alive, if only just, following a blip a couple of months back. Either way, though, they’ll know and understand the importance of getting into the Champions League, which is why it’s so important to lock that up.

Team News

Schafer is out injured with Behrens being suspended for the hosts.

Bayer Leverkusen

It’s been a campaign to remember for Bayer Leverkusen thus far and although they haven’t been overly consistent in the league, their recent form suggests that they’re ready to make a push for the top four. In addition to that, they are also going strong in the Europa League. Whichever way you slice it, this Leverkusen side has the potential to pull off something special in the weeks ahead.

Team News

Lunev is injured, Amiri is suspended and the following players are doubtful to appear: Schick, Adli, Palacios, Tapsoba and Wirtz.

Factors to Consider

  • In their last meeting back in November, Leverkusen beat Union Berlin 5-0.
  • Union Berlin have won three, drawn one and lost two of their last six games.
  • Leverkusen have won four and drawn two of their last six games.
  • Union Berlin have scored eight goals and conceded five in their last six games.
  • Leverkusen have scored 13 goals and conceded three in their last six games.

Union being at home is huge for them considering the form that Leverkusen have been in lately. We expect to see the visitors really try and get off to a bright start, pinning Berlin back early before finally breaking them down later in the game. It’s going to be tight and it’s going to heavily rely on what happens in the middle of the park, but our prediction is an entertaining 2-2 draw.
