The Belarussian debutants were greeted crudely to the Champions League on 11 minutes Guti’s brilliant ball found Sergio Ramos at point-blank range for Madrid’s opener.

Ruud van Nistelrooy added a second for the home side in the 57th minute
after BATE goalkeeper Dmitri Likhtarovich could only parry a shot by Raúl. The visitors finished with 10 men after Anri Khagush was booked for a second time just five minutes later.

Juventus 1-0 Zenit St. Petersburg
Juventus made a triumphant return to Champions League play thanks to a sublime free kick by Alessandro Del Piero on 76 minutes.

The strike was the only goal of the match, and the reigning UEFA Cup and Super Cup winners from Russia were left goalless in their opener.
