The St Louis Rams have sacked head coach Steve Spagnuolo after finishing the 2011 NFL regular season with a 2-14 record.

After a terrible first season at the helm, with the Rams finishing 2009 at 1-15, Spagnuolo led them to a 7-9 record last season and they narrowly missed out on a spot in the play-offs.

But 2011 was a disaster for the 52-year-old, with the Rams level with the Indianapolis Colts for the worst record in the NFL.

Spagnuolo, who has previously been defensive coach at the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants, finished with a record of 10-38 from his three seasons in St Louis.

Jim Fisher, a former head coach with the Tennessee Titans, has been linked with the vacant position.
