Real Madrid were able to keep their title hopes alive last night courtesy of a comprehensive 2-0 win over lowly Getafe, with the victory putting them within a closer distance of local rivals Atletico Madrid in the fight to claim the La Liga crown.

Getafe’s woes

Real had nine first team players out through injury or suspension heading into this game, and yet, Getafe barely had a sniff in what turned out to be a really dominant performance from the hosts. It was noted in the lead up to the game that this could be Getafe’s chance to really turn their fortunes around, but instead, they seemed to lie down and take a beating that could’ve actually been far worse. They’re situated only four points above the relegation zone and based on their current form, they could easily be dragged into a scrap to survive.

The Benzema effect

He’s reportedly gearing up to leave the club in the not too distant future, and when he does, we hope Real Madrid supporters will finally come to appreciate the genius of Karim Benzema. The Frenchman is easily one of the most underrated strikers in world football and we’d argue that’s been the case for the past decade or so. As he prepares to move on to a brand new chapter in his life, let’s just remember that he is still scoring goals after almost 12 years in Madrid – which is a testament to his abilities and longevity.

A glimmer of hope?

Real Madrid are priced at 5/1 with 888sport to win La Liga this season which puts them behind Atletico Madrid, who are five points clear with two games in hand. We aren’t suggesting that Real are going to go on an incredible run and win the title out of nowhere, but it’s definitely not an impossible prospect to consider. Barcelona look shaky, Atletico could easily start to feel the pressure and Real still have plenty of star-studded names who are capable of dragging them back into this race. It’s obviously going to be tough but if any team is going to be in that mix, it’s them.
