Real Madrid go after de Jong

According to Mundo Deportivo, European champions Real Madrid are set to enter the race for Frenkie de Jong. The 21 year old has been turning heads for Ajax over the last few years, and in the summer, it seemed as if a move to Barcelona would be imminent. Alas, the Dutch giants apparently convinced him to remain at the club for another season, as they rejected bids not only from Barca but also from English club Tottenham Hotspur.

If Real do indeed enter the race, however, it’s a whole different ball game. As the European champions we could easily see a scenario in which de Jong strongly considers a move there, especially given his intention to become a household name. At this point, however, he is still reportedly leaning more towards Barcelona. His price tag could end up exceeding £50 million by the time next summer rolls around, especially if Ajax can go far in Europe again.
