Garry Monk has been named the new manager of Sheffield Wednesday.

The Owls have been seeking a new boss since Steve Bruce controversially left to take charge of Premier League side Newcastle United in July.

Caretaker manager Lee Bullen made his case for the job with three wins from their first four Championship games this term.

But Wednesday have opted for 40-year-old Monk, having previously been linked with Lincoln City’s Danny Cowley and ex-Stoke City boss Tony Pulis.

Former Swansea City, Leeds United and Middlesbrough manager Monk was sacked by Birmingham City in June.

“I was a player here many moons ago and even though it was a short spell, I got a good grasp of how powerful and traditional this club,” Monk, who enjoyed a loan spell at Wednesday during his playing career, told a news conference.

“My overriding feeling is excitement and what we can do here.  We know we have a capable squad and it’s about making us compete as hard as we can.

“It has been a steady start, we are in a healthy position with good foundations. The things that is exciting is that we could have a very strong squad in this league and it’s about bringing that out.”

Wednesday, 11th in the Championship table, will play under Monk for the first time on September 15 when they are away to Huddersfield Town.
