Manchester United head coach Marc Skinner urged his side “to go and create history” in the second leg of their Women’s Champions League quarter-final against Bayern Munich.

The Red Devils trail 3-2 at the halfway point in the tie as Penille Harder starred for Bayern in the first leg with a brace at Old Trafford.

Only Arsenal’s Alessia Russo (eight) has scored more Women’s Champions League goals this season than Harder (seven).

Ten English teams have previously lost the first leg of a Women’s Champions League knockout stage tie at home, but only one has gone on to progress.

It was on the most recent occasion, however, with Arsenal losing 2-1 at home before winning 4-1 away in the second leg against Lyon in last season’s semi-finals.

Skinner has full confidence in United to get the job done at Allianz Arena on Wednesday, despite their first-leg deficit.

“I believe in this team,” said the United boss. “The only thing missing [which stopped] Bayern from having a really tough night at Old Trafford was a little bit of composure in the final third.

“There were two or three passes that we missed that would have created goalscoring opportunities, so we have to sharpen up on that.

“We know what we have to do. We have to come in and silence a fantastic arena with brilliant fans, and we have to go and create history.”

Bayern have won each of their five previous Women’s Champions League home games against English opposition, beating Chelsea twice and Arsenal three times.

Defender Giulia Gwinn is relishing another European match in front of their home fans, but insisted Bayern would not rest on their laurels against United.

“It’s the greatest thing to play Champions League football in front of our own fans,” said Gwinn. “We are very strong as a team. We are not afraid, but we have a healthy respect for United.

“We know what we are capable of, and we will not abandon each other on the pitch. Everyone is on board; everyone knows what is at stake.”
