Jesper Sorensen believes he inherited a Vancouver Whitecaps team that was in fine shape and has not been surprised by their perfect start to the MLS season.

The Caps beat the LA Galaxy 2-1 at BC Place on Sunday, with Sam Adekugbe and Brian White on target for the hosts.

Following a 4-1 rout of their Cascadia rivals, the Portland Timbers, on matchday one, Vancouver have started an MLS season with back-to-back wins for the first time since 2018.

But Sorensen, who replaced Vanni Sartini ahead of the new campaign, feels his predecessor and the players deserve credit for their fast start to the campaign.

“I think first and foremost, I came in and inherited a team that was well-structured and in good shape,” he said.

“I would say that the team has looked great. They’d done well in pre-season. Everybody has chipped in and been ready for the new ideas I brought in.

“I can only be happy with what I’ve seen so far and hope it’s only the beginning.”

Matchwinner White, however, hailed Sorensen for his tactical changes and believes everyone at the club has bought into his methods.

“I think everyone’s bought into the new philosophy, the gameplan,” he said.

“Little bit of a change of pace and I think everyone’s bought in and feels energised. I think you’re seeing a good product out on the field.”

The Galaxy, meanwhile, have started 2025 with back-to-back losses, having won the MLS Cup for a record-extending sixth time last year.

“We didn’t manage the space well,” Galaxy head coach Greg Vanney said afterwards.

“The strong side centre-back has to be able to deal with that, help us deal with that space and we weren’t all the way there. So that opened us up right off the bat.”

Both teams are in CONCACAF Champions Cup action in midweek, with the Galaxy visiting Costa Rica’s Herediano and Vancouver hosting Mexican giants Monterrey.
