Sporting Kansas City have announced the signing of centre-back Diego Borges as they look to bolster their defence in the 2026 MLS season.

The 21-year-old defender has signed a four-and-a-half-year deal with the MLS side, with a club option for another year, as he will occupy an international spot on the club’s roster.

The Brazilian came through the Santos academy before making his senior debut for Amazonas, while his move to MLS comes after a short spell with Zalaegerszeg in Hungary.

Kansas City have conceded seven goals in their opening four MLS games this term, with only Minnesota United and the Portland Timbers conceding more in the Western Conference (both 11).

Borges joins as a part of SKC’s U22 Initiative, while he is not expected to feature against the Colorado Rapids this weekend.

“We are delighted that Diego has decided to join Sporting KC for the next stage of his career,” President of Soccer Operations & General Manager David Lee said.

“Diego is a young and exciting prospect at centre-back who has experienced a quick rise from Serie B in Brazil to showing excellent performances in Hungary.

“Diego has many attributes that made him a coveted target for a number of teams around the world with his size, athleticism and quality on the ball.

“The U22 Initiative allows us to compete for players of this profile and our role now is to help him continue to develop his potential and contribute to our success.”

The Rapids are seventh in the West with six points to their name after starting the season with two wins and two draws.

They lost 3-1 to Eastern Conference leaders New York City FC last time out, ending their brief winning run of two victories.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Sporting Kansas City – Lasse Berg Johnsen

Lasse Berg Johnsen scored the winning goal for Sporting Kansas City against LA Galaxy last time out after Dejan Joveljic scored the first.

Berg Johnsen’s goal ended a run of six straight Sporting goals (excluding own goals) scored by Joveljic, as the former became the first SKC player other than Joveljic to score in MLS since August.

Colorado Rapids – Rafael Navarro

Rafael Navarro set up Darren Yapi for Colorado’s lone goal against New York City FC.

Both Navarro (two goals, one assist) and Yapi (two goals, one assist) have been involved in three of Colorado’s six goals this season with at least one being involved in each of the last five.

MATCH PREDICTION – DRAW

Sporting Kansas City recorded their first win of the season, defeating the Galaxy 2-1.

Sporting were one of four teams (CF Montreal, D.C. United, Toronto FC) that did not win consecutive regular-season matches last season as their last set of back-to-back league wins came in July 2024.

Colorado have won their first two home matches of the regular season but lost their first two on the road.

The Rapids have lost six straight away matches dating back to the end of last season, the club’s longest road losing run in league play since a nine-match run to close the 2023 season.

SKC have won three straight matches against Colorado after winning one of the previous seven (D3 L3).

OPTA WIN PROBABILITY

Sporting Kansas City – 36.2%

Draw – 26.2%

Colorado Rapids – 37.6%
