New Inter signing Petar Sucic says it would be “fantastic” to play against Luka Modric in a Milan derby next season.

Sucic joined Inter at the start of June and has since made four appearances at the Club World Cup, registering his first assist in their 2-0 win over River Plate in the group stage.

Last week, AC Milan’s sporting director, Igli Tare, confirmed the club were working on a deal to sign Modric after having initial discussions with the player, claiming he wants him to fill a much-needed leadership role.

Modric announced he would be leaving Real Madrid at the conclusion of the Club World Cup after 13 years at the club, and with the tournament in the knockout stages, his exit is edging closer.

The Croatian has made 593 appearances for Madrid in all competitions, scoring 43 goals and registering 95 assists in that time.

Last season, Modric played 2,863 minutes for Madrid, and though his playing time was down, he still created the second-most chances (99), with only Vinicius Junior (101) creating more for Los Blancos.

He set up 66 of those chances in LaLiga, more than any of his team-mates, while only four players created more.

Though a formal deal is yet to be confirmed between Milan and Modric, Sucic is already eyeing a match-up against his compatriot in Serie A next term.

“At Inter, I aim to challenge myself to a new level on multiple fronts. That’s why I am here,” he told Repubblica.

“So let him [Modric] sign. I won’t call him until that moment. I watched his football for ten years. Playing against him would be fantastic.

“I want to be remembered for who I am. I didn’t have posters of anyone, but I studied him [Modric], and [Andres] Iniesta, Xavi and Sergio Busquets. I liked Arsenal’s style of play, but I don’t want to imitate anyone.”
