Competition: League One
Market: Sunderland win
Odds: 17/10 @ 888sport
With the chance to move within striking distance of the automatic spots, Sunderland will make the trip to a struggling Portsmouth on Tuesday night.
Starting with the hosts, while Portsmouth might still be battling it out in the play-off picture, the Blues are in the midst of a worrying spell. Failing to bounce back from their 2-1 defeat against Doncaster when opening March, the South Coast outfit put in a hugely concerning display last time out. Putting in what many around Fratton Park are billing as a season-worst display away at Northampton on Saturday afternoon, Kenny Jackett’s side were hit with a 4-1 drumming after shipping a quartet of goals in the first-half. Knowing that defeat in midweek could see them fall out of the play-off positions, Pompey have managed to win just one of their last six third-tier contests, a run that stems back to February 9th. More worrying for Tuesday’s hosts, facing a stern test on the South Coast, Jackett’s men have won just one of their last six matchups on home soil, a run that saw them get hit for four by Hull back in January.
As for the visitors, while Portsmouth might be in the midst of an extended rut, the mood in Sunderland’s camp should be at a real high. Finding their feet under new boss Lee Johnson, the Black Cats were last seen putting in another professional display over the weekend. Eventually landing themselves a 2-0 win at home against Rochdale, the former Premier League outfit are unbeaten in their last seven matchups across all formats, winning six of those contests. Knowing that victory on the South Coast in midweek could see them move within touching distance of the automatic spots, it should also be noted that Sunderland have collected 16 points from their last six League One fixtures. Remarkably with just a single third-tier defeat away from the Stadium of Light all season, there is no doubt that Johnson’s men will be confident of laying down another marker on Tuesday night.
