Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea: Three Things We Learned

It was another desperate evening for Tottenham Hotspur last night as they fell to a disappointing 1-0 defeat against local rivals Chelsea in North London. The game was only ever really trending in one direction with the Blues taking home all three points courtesy of a first half penalty from Jorginho.

Chelsea’s spark is still there

Even though they only won 1-0, most fans would probably agree that the Blues could’ve had four or five on another day. Thomas Tuchel is starting to implement a progressive passing system and with the likes of Mason Mount and Mateo Kovacic at the heart of it, they can’t really go wrong. As long as they can start finding their scoring boots again with players like Werner needing to step up in that department, there’s a very good chance they could have a positive end to the current campaign.

Time’s up for Jose?

It’s not just his haters calling for Jose Mourinho’s head anymore – and rightly so. The Portuguese legend isn’t often known as The Special One these days and the reason for that is simple: the game has passed him by. That may not be true in other areas around Europe but it’s definitely the case in the Premier League, with last night being a shining example of why his negative style just isn’t working for Tottenham. If they don’t win a piece of silverware this season, which is a very realistic prospect, he’ll almost certainly be gone in the summer.

The Blues’ top four hopes are alive

Right now, Chelsea are priced as the fifth favourites to finish in the top four at 7/5 with 888sport. That places them behind Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool and Leicester, which makes a lot of sense. Tuchel will know that finishing in the top four and maybe winning some silverware is the best he can probably hope for in the next few months before he gets a chance to really sink his teeth into the job during the summer. Based on last night, we’d say they’re in a strong position and should be viewed as a team to watch as the season continues.
