Andy Robertson has announced he will leave Liverpool when his contract expires at the end of the season, and according to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Tottenham Hotspur are the prime candidates to obtain his services, leading the race ahead of clubs from abroad.
The Scotland captain was a regular starter for a large majority of his time at Liverpool, having arrived from Hull City in a £8million deal in 2017. He played a major role in everything the Merseysiders achieved under Jurgen Klopp and added his second Premier League title under Arne Slot last season, making a total of 373 appearances so far, with 13 goals and 69 assists to his name in all competitions.
Now 32, he has lost his place in the team to Milos Kerkez, last summer’s arrival from Bournemouth, and he’s ready to leave Anfield in pursuit of regular game time elsewhere.
Spurs showed strong interest in Robertson in January and appeared open to the move, but no deal materialized as Liverpool’s injury crisis and poor results forced them to close the door. Nothing is finalized at this point as he remains focused on helping his team as much as possible in pursuing Champions League qualification for next season.
Robertson is still open to joining the North London club, but it will depend on their ability to secure Premier League survival. After West Ham’s victory over Wolves on Friday, they’ve fallen into the relegation zone, but they will have a chance to climb out again on Sunday when they face Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. A win there would lift them a point above the Hammers again.
