United closing in on Bruno Fernandes

Manchester United are now very close to completing a deal to sign Bruno Fernandes from Sporting Lisbon, according to Sky Sports.

Sporting face their arch-rivals Benfica today (Friday), and that could be the midfielder’s final appearance for his current club with the transfer set to be done soon after. Sporting have demanded £60 million for his services, and it seems United have agreed to pay £43 million upfront, and the other £17m later in reasonably achievable add-ons. The personal terms have already been agreed between Fernandes and United, and he is set to sign a contract which would see him earn £120,000 per week.

The links between United and the 25-year-old Portugal international have been frequent since the summer, when Tottenham Hotspur reportedly also held an interest in him. But it seems Spurs have now missed their chance with the player set to arrive at Old Trafford in the coming days.

The transfer would become the second most-expensive sale by a Portuguese club, behind Benfica’s €120 million deal which saw Joao Felix join Atletico Madrid last summer.
