Fredy Montero scored the only goal of the game as in-form Vancouver Whitecaps defeated Portland Timbers 1-0 in MLS.

Former Sporting CP star Montero broke the deadlock in the ninth minute to extend hosts Vancouver’s unbeaten streak to three matches.

Montero unleashed a powerful strike into the top corner of the net for his second goal in two matches on Friday.

With the win, the Whitecaps moved into seventh position and the play-off places in the Western Conference after 11 games.

The Timbers, meanwhile, had their three-game winning run ended as they dropped to 10th.
