Despite his more than modest contribution at Camp Nou, former Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen seems to have done more than enough to earn a new contract with Barcelona.

Thomas Vermaelen’s current contract expires at the end of 2019 but, according to the reports from Spanish Sport, the Catalan giants are expected to extend the Belgian international’s deal by a further year at the end of the running season.

The 32-year-old struggled to gain his footing at Barcelona due to frequent injuries which severely hampered his first three seasons at Camp Nou.

Despite being handed a limited playing time under new boss Ernesto Valverde the Belgian defender managed to notch up 16 appearances for Blaugrana in 2017/18.

Former Arsenal skipper did well to replace Samuel Umtiti during his spell on the sidelines and seems to have convinced the Barcelona hierarchy to present him with a new offer to extend his stay in Spain until 2020.
