Bayern Munich returned to the top of the Bundesliga table over the weekend with an enthralling 4-2 win over Wolfsburg.

As the pressure continues to build in German football’s top tier, Bayern continue to meet the requirements. They went down to ten men in this six-goal thriller and yet despite Wolfsburg battling their way back into proceedings, the favourites were able to hold on and get the three points.

Today, we’re going to take a look at a few of the big stories coming out of Sunday’s encounter.

Bayern show heart

Despite having ten men, and Wolfsburg peppering the Bayern goal, the boys from Munich won 4-2 with all the pressure in the world on their backs. They, in many ways, were outplayed, but their veteran instincts helped them shine through. They don’t even have a handful of their star players but with the likes of Thomas Muller leading the line, and Coman alongside him, they did what they needed to do.

Wolfsburg’s rough luck

In addition to having 52% possession and 22 shots, Wolfsburg also looked like the better team for long spells – outside of the first 20 minutes in which they completely fell asleep. In the 84th, a somewhat controversial decision ensured that they wouldn’t be able to make it a grandstand finish – which, in itself, is enough of a chip on the shoulder to push them even further on their top six quest.

The chasing pack

Bayern’s win ensured that they vaulted back above Union Berlin in the table to claim 1st place, but only by one point. They also have Dortmund, Leipzig, Frankfurt and Freiburg to contend with, all of whom are no more than six points off of top spot. This is the most intense title race we’ve seen in a long time and based on recent evidence, Munich are going to be pushed to their limit in more ways than one.
