Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero picked-up an injury that could be a major blow to the Citizens season

Manchester City claimed a tight 1-0 victory over Everton yesterday courtesy of a debatable penalty kick from Ivorian midfielder Yaya Toure.

However, the win was overshadowed by an injury to City’s star striker Sergio Aguero in just the second minute.

The Argentinian international picked-up what could be a devastating injury in a challenge with former-City and England central midfielder Gareth Barry.

It does not currently look good for the striker or City.

Unknown

The extent of Aguero’s injury will not be known for a couple of days. City boss Manuel Pellegrini told Sky Sports: “Sergio has a problem in his knee ligament. We will see how serious it is after he has had a scan,”

“It is not good news and I don’t think he will be able to play next week. He will not be with us for Roma – which is an important game.

“He was more calm when I saw him after seeing the doctor but generally we are not sure how he is.”

On-fire

Aguero has been in top scoring form this season with 19 goals in 20 appearances in all competitions for the Citizens. The 26-year-olds form has kept City’s season alive, with vital goals in both the Premier League and Champions League.

Vital

Manchester City faces a vital Champions League decider at Roma on Wednesday. The Citizens simply have to win to have any chance of making it to knockout stages of Europe’s elite competition this season.

City have proved that they are nowhere as good a team without their diminutive striker. City’s attacking options now seem slightly limited. Bosnian international striker Edin Dzeko looks the most likely choice for the lone striker role, but he has only just recovered from injury.

Montenegrin forward Stevan Jovetic has flattered to deceive as a striker and has looked more effective cutting in from the flanks. The former-Fiorentina star is currently also sidelined by injury.

The other forward option is youngster Jose Pozo, who replaced Aguero in yesterday’s game, but was later substituted himself. The 18-year-old has made just two appearances for City, with his Premier League debut coming as a substitute against Sunderland in midweek.

It would be a lot to ask of the youngster to lead City’s attacking line in such a big game and when the Citizens are badly in need of a victory to take them through. Strangely it seems that City are now lacking attacking talent.

Inevitable

Sergio Aguero has been so injury-prone in recent seasons that it was almost inevitable that the Argentine was going to pick-up an injury at some point during the season. Even prior to the game Chilean boss Manuel Pellegrini was being quizzed about what City would do if the striker was injured?

It was like everybody was just waiting for the striker to pick-up his latest injury and the latest problem could be a serious one and cost City dearly this season.

Worrying

Everybody connected with Manchester City will be worried by Aguero’s injury. City may have spent hundreds of millions on strengthening their squad in the last few years, but any team would miss a player of the quality of Aguero.

Aguero is the stand-out performer in the Manchester City team, a player that cannot be replaced by any other. On his day he is arguably one of the best finishers in world football and the striker getting another injury is a blow for everyone involved.

Waiting

The way that Pellegrini was talking about the injury Sergio Aguero’s injury could be a serious one. The injury will have an impact on City’s Champions League campaign and if he is out for a sustained period of time then it could badly affect their Premier League campaign as well.

Everybody connected with City will be hoping and praying that Sergio Aguero’s injury is not too serious and that he will be back in a sky blue shirt in the near future.

Can Manchester City cope without Sergio Aguero?
