Barcelona eye Inigo Martinez to replace Gerard Pique

Barcelona are interested in signing Inigo Martinez from Athletic Bilbao in the January transfer window, according to Sport. The report has claimed that the former La Liga and UEFA Champions League winners are looking to replace Gerard Pique in the squad in the middle of the season following the Spanish central defender’s retirement, and that Martinez is one of the players on their radar.

Martinez has been on the books of Bilbao since January 2018 when he joined from La Liga rivals Real Sociedad. The Spain international has established himself as one of the best centre-backs in La Liga over the years and is at the top of his game at the age of 31.

Barcelona are at the top of the Premier League table at the moment with 37 points from 14 matches, five points clear of second-placed and defending champions Real Madrid, who have played 13 times. Meanwhile, Manchester City are currently second in the Premier League table with 32 points from 13 games, two points behind leaders Arsenal.
