Looking to make another statement and extend their buffer at the top of the A-League standings, Newcastle will travel to Perth on Friday morning.
Starting with the hosts, despite enjoying what was a stellar three-match winning run on either side of opening December, Perth have once again drastically struggled to find any kind of stability over recent times. Eventually forced to settle for a thrilling 2-2 stalemate away at Macarthur last time out, Adam Griffiths’ side have recorded just a sole win from any of their previous four A-League appearances and they essentially find themselves sat in domestic limbo. However, despite facing what will certainly be a stern examination on Friday morning, the Glory will take some solace from their rugged success on home soil. Springing an upset as they signed off January with a 2-1 victory against reigning A-League champions Auckland, Perth have won three of their last four showdowns at HBF Park. It should also be highlighted, Griffiths’ men secured a shock 2-1 win when they travelled to the McDonald Jones Stadium for their reverse A-League showdown on November 23rd.
As for the visitors, shattering a string of records and suddenly at the heart of what has become an iconic fairytale, Newcastle have firmly cemented their spot as Australia’s ultimate surprise package this season. Remarkably leading the chase at the top of the A-League standings and with the mood in Mark Milligan’s camp at a famous high, Friday’s guests have rightfully received a string of plaudits and they will simply be looking to widen their buffer over the chasing pack here. Last seen securing an action-packed 3-2 victory away at Adelaide, Newcastle have astonishingly won all of their previous six consecutive A-League appearances. Signing off January with back-to-back 4-1 romps against Wellington and Brisbane, the Jets have also gained a fearsome reputation for their clinical performances in the final third. Opening the New Year with a 3-1 victory away at Auckland, Newcastle have notched 37 goals in their 16 A-League showdowns so far this season and they comfortably hold the best-attacking tally among Australia’s elite.
