Championship: Middlesbrough fail to capitalise on Coventry draw at Southampton

Championship leaders Coventry City dropped points for the third time in four games after they hung on for a 1-1 draw against Southampton.

Ephron Mason-Clark put Frank Lampard’s side ahead just before the break, but a straight red card for Jay Dasilva in the 47th minute complicated things for the visitors.

Nathan Wood levelled proceedings soon after, but the Saints, who produced 1.31 expected goals (xG) from 23 shots to Coventry’s 0.48 from four attempts, were unable to find a winner at home.

Nevertheless, Coventry still extended their lead at the Championship summit to six points after second-place Middlesbrough lost 2-0 at Bristol City.

Goals from Emil Riis and Rob Atkinson, either side of the break, were enough to snap Boro’s four-game winning streak and hand Kim Hellberg his first defeat since taking charge.

Ipswich Town and Hull City, meanwhile, both closed the gap on the automatic promotion places with wins over Sheffield Wednesday and West Brom, respectively.

Cedric Kipre, Jaden Philogene and Jack Clarke all got on the scoresheet for Ipswich in a routine 3-1 win over Wednesday, while Oli McBurnie’s penalty in first-half stoppage time gave Hull a 1-0 win at the MKM Stadium.

Southampton have secured 19 points (W6 D1 L2) from a possible 27 on offer since Tonda Eckert took charge on November 5.

The Saints have moved up to 11th in the Championship, with only Coventry (20) winning more points from the last 10 games in the league.

Meanwhile, Middlesbrough attempted 28 shots in their defeat, their highest total in a single match in the Championship this season, and accumulated 1.93 xG despite only three shots hitting the target.
