Chelsea captain Millie Bright has confirmed her retirement with immediate effect.

The 32-year-old, who made 88 appearances for England, has won 20 trophies across a 12-year spell with Chelsea.

She played an integral role in Chelsea’s dominance of the Women’s Super League, with the Blues having won six straight titles.

While Manchester City look set to end Chelsea’s WSL monopoly this term, the Blues sit second, six points back from the leaders with two games to play.

Sonia Bampastor’s team are still in the FA Cup, in which they will take on Man City in the semi-finals, but Bright, who has not featured for Chelsea since February due to an ankle injury, has elected to hang up her boots.

“Representing Chelsea over the last 12 years has been everything to me, but I’m now ready to say goodbye to playing football. I’ve given all I can, and I never wanted to fight for any other badge,” said Bright, who is the club’s longest-serving player and was part of the team that led the Blues to their first title win back in 2015.

“It is now time, and I’m ready to go into a new era. I’m always going to be Chelsea, but just in a different way.”

Bright, who joined Chelsea from Doncaster Belles, has made a club-record 314 appearances for the Blues.

She has made a record 216 WSL appearances, six more than second-best Jordan Nobbs, while she is the only player in the competition’s history to make over 200 starts (204).

The defender leads the WSL for games won (145), clean sheets (93) and passes completed (10,071), while she ranks fourth for headed clearances (353). She has scored 12 WSL goals.

Bright retired from international football in October last year, having withdrawn from the Lionesses’ squad for Euro 2025, citing a need to recover mentally and physically from a gruelling season in which Chelsea won a domestic treble. She made 36 appearances last term, and has played 14 times in the top flight in 2025-26.

She helped England win Euro 2022, and captained Sarina Wiegman’s team at the 2023 World Cup in the absence of Leah Williamson.
