According to Goal, Manchester United head coach, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could sell highly-rated first-choice goalkeeper David de Gea this summer to raise funds to strengthen the rest of his squad. The report claims that the Norwegian plans to overhaul his squad this summer, but will need the finances to be able to strengthen. The move would make sense, as they currently have one of the top young goalkeepers on their books in Dean Henderson. The 22-year-old has been impressive on-loan this season Sheffield United.

De Gea’s form has been worrying this season

David de Gea is regarded by many as one of the best goalkeepers in the world game. However, the Spaniard’s form this season, or more accurately lack of form is concerning for the Red Devils. The Spanish international has been uncharacteristically shaky this season.

He has made more errors and not looked as confident as in seasons gone by. The 29-year-old’s displays have led to speculation over his happiness in Manchester and whether he sees his future elsewhere. Something has definitely has been amiss this season with the Spanish goalkeeper.

Dean Henderson has a bright future

While at Sheffield United, Dean Henderson has proven his quality this season in the Premier League. The 22-year-old has been one of the top goalkeepers in the English top-flight, with only Liverpool stopper Alisson Becker and Burnley’s Nick Pope keeping more clean sheets this season.

The Blades loanee’s form has been that impressive that there been calls for him to start for England. On current form, he is certainly a better bet than current first-choice Everton’s Jordan Pickford.

At club level, the youngster has never hidden the fact that playing for Manchester United is his dream for the long-term. The latest loan spells have just been to gain experience so that one day he could come back to Old Trafford a more experienced player. Well, judging by both ‘keepers form this season, it is not impossible that Henderson could replace De Gea in the United goal.

De Gea may be more experienced, but Manchester United are unlikely to want to lose Henderson to another club on a full-time basis. Maybe that means selling De Gea in order to allow Henderson the chance to prove he has what it takes to be the clubs number one for the long-term. The scenario cannot be ruled out, with United boss Solskjaer looking at bringing some top talent this summer.

There will be massive interest in De Gea’s services this summer if United were willing to sell the 29-year-old. Real Madrid, PSG and Juventus are three clubs talked about as potential destinations for the Spaniard.

Fighting it out for European places

Incredibly, Henderson has helped his team mount an unlikely challenge for a European spot this season. The Blades started the season as one of the favourites to go down to the Championship.

Yet, the Yorkshire outfit are currently seventh place in the table, just a point behind United, who occupy the final Champions League spot. The Blades are now odds of 15/2 to seal a top-five spot. Chris Wilder’s team are certainly not out of the equation to qualify for continental football next season.

It would be a massive achievement and Henderson will have literally had a big hand achieving the goal. The young goalkeeper will be focussed on helping the Blades pick up as many points ass they can until the end of the season. Who knows he may well be back at Old Trafford as Manchester United number one next season.
