Could Manchester City sell Leroy Sane this summer?

According to the Guardian, Bayern Munich are set to bid £70million for Manchester City winger Leroy Sane. The German giants are reportedly confident of getting a deal done to sign the former Schalke star this summer.

Bayern are looking for wide players with veteran wingers Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery both leaving the club this summer. Sane could replace either of the stars, as he is capable of playing on either flank.

Sane enjoyed a good campaign

Bayern’s interest in the winger is understandable considering Sane’s performances this season. The Germany international has started to fulfil his immense potential over the past seasons. This season the winger scored 16 times in 47 appearances in all competitions for the Citizens.

Despite a good season, Sane fell out of favour in the last few weeks of the campaign. In fact, the winger started just one of City’s last five Premier League games, in spite of the fact that the top-flight title was still very much on the line.

However, It is not the first time that City boss Pep Guardiola has omitted Sane from his starting line-up. The Catalan boss has high standards and if players do not live up them, then they do not start games it’s that simple.

Maybe Guardiola would be open to the idea of selling the winger, despite his immense talent and potential. The Catalan boss has stated that he wants Sane to stay, but that some players may move on this summer in search of regular first-team football. Could Sane be one them?

Bayern and Sane a good match

In terms of the potential move, Bayern and Leroy Sane look like a good match. The 23-year-old is no doubt the sort of talented player who would thrive at a club like Bayern if he plays regular first-team football of course.

The Bundesliga is one of the most exciting in the world and maybe a return to his home country would interest the winger, especially as it is with the German champions. I believe that Sane would flourish in the German top-flight, as he would likely be afforded more room to operate and improve his game.

From both the player and the buying clubs’ point of view, a summer move makes sense. However, looking on as an outsider, it makes little sense for Manchester City to sell one of their most talented players.

City could face a fight to keep Sane

Bayern’s season is not over just yet, as this weekend the Bavarians face RB Leipzig in the German Cup final, in a game they are favourites to win at odds of 1/ 2. The German champions are likely to then focus their full attention on recruitment this summer.

They have already completed the signings of French World Cup winning duo Lucas Hernandez and Benjamin Pavard for just under £100million. However, the exits of wingers Robben and Ribery will leave a gap in their forward options.

Reportedly, Sane is now top of the Bavarians summer transfer shopping list this summer. If Sane wants to go to Bayern, then City could have a fight on their hands to keep hold of the talented winger.

If Sane left for the mooted fee, then the Citizens will have nearly doubled their money on the player in three years. With other areas of the team in need of strengthening, it does not seem impossible to me that City may well sell Sane this summer.
