Curbs still wants Sunderland job

Alan Curbishley admits that he is still interested in the job as Sunderland manager.

The former Charlton and West Ham boss has been out of a job since leaving the Hammers three months ago.

“I don’t think anyone really knows what’s going to go on,” said Curbishley.

“There’s lots of speculation. Sunderland have to get a manager, but Niall has come out and said that they are going to take their time because it’s a big appointment.

“It’s a big club, but it’s a big job as well. When you find yourself in that bottom three round about this time of the year, there’s a lot of hard work to get out of it.

“Would I be interested? I think it’s more a case of Niall and the board having to be interested in me. We will have to see what happens.

“They did fantastically well to win promotion in the first place and they consolidated last year.

“I must admit I didn’t expect Sunderland to be where they are at the present, but you can go on these runs in the Premier League.

“Sunderland have gone seven or eight games (with just one win), Blackburn have gone eight or nine games (without a win). You can do that in the Premier League.

“You’ve got to stop that run somehow. It’s difficult, but the next week comes along and there’s another opportunity to do it.”
