Darren Bent has said that Arsenal should not sell Ainsley Maitland-Niles to bitter North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the summer transfer window.

According to The Daily Mail, Tottenham are among the clubs interested in signing Maintland-Niles from Premier League rivals Arsenal, who are rated at 16/5 by Betfair to finish in the top four next season.

Former Spurs striker Bent, who is a boyhood Arsenal fan, has said that the Gunners should not sell the 22-year-old – who can operate as a midfielder, winger, full-back or wing-back – t0 Jose Mourinho’s side this summer.

Bent told Football Insider: “I hope it doesn’t happen. I think he played really well last season at times.

“He’s got the capability to play in several different positions. I can’t see how Arsenal can let that one happen, I think the fans are going to be infuriated.

“I know a lot of the fans like him down there. They won’t be able to understand letting him walk out of the door especially to your rivals. I don’t think it would go down too well.”

Stats

According to WhoScored, Maitland-Niles made 15 starts and five substitute appearances in the Premier League for Arsenal during the 2019-20 season, providing two assists in the process.

The English youngster also made four starts and two substitute appearances in the Europa League for the Gunners this past campaign, according to WhoScored.

Crossing the North London divide

Maitland-Niles is a very good and promising young player who would find a club other than Tottenham before the summer transfer window ends.

It would be best for all parties if the youngster does not cross the North London divide this summer.
