Didier Deschamps was thrilled by the performances of France’s second string in Sunday’s 3-1 defeat of Azerbaijan.

Kylian Mbappe missed Les Bleus’ final World Cup qualifier, while Deschamps rotated out big names like Mike Maignan, Michael Olise, William Saliba and Dayot Upamecano.

However, his back-up brigade came up with the goods.

After France fell behind in the fourth minute, goals from Jean-Philippe Mateta and Maghnes Akliouche put them ahead by the half-hour mark. Sahruddin Mahammadaliyev’s own goal saw Les Bleus take a 3-1 lead heading into half-time.

“We average a little over two goals per match, which is very good,” Deschamps said.

“Mateta was making only his second ever start and he scored a lovely header. So that’s great for us and for him.”

France finished top of Group D on 16 points, six clear of second-place Ukraine.

Deschamps was also pleased, specifically, with Monaco youngster Akliouche, who created two chances and played in a team-high nine crosses,

“He has been improving steadily,” Deschamps said of the winger.

“With his temperament, he was a bit introverted at the beginning, but he’s opened up a bit more. He’s scoring now, he’s made the most of his playing time.

“He’s managed to take a step forward.”

Liverpool’s Hugo Ekitike started in a wide left position, and though he managed only one shot, Deschamps felt the striker handled himself well.

“Ekitike is gaining confidence too,” Deschamps added.

“He’s a young player with lots of dynamism and he was able to express himself with his stamina to get around the pitch as well as his ability to penetrate with his speed.

“So they’re another two pieces to consider on the offensive side of the ball going forward.”
