England start with a draw. I don’t know whether to be optimistic or depressed.

Third best of the three?

I don’t know whether to be optimistic or totally depressed after England’s 1-1 draw with the USA yesterday.

Badly

The fact is that England didn’t play too badly but a 1-1 draw is hardly likely to frighten the other teams at the tournament. After such a great start when Steve Gerrard put us ahead in the first few minutes it could have gone a whole lot better, but we didn’t lose and Algeria and Slovenia surely can’t prove too much of an obstacle.

Whilst I was very disappointed with the result and a little bit disappointed with the performance, if Rob Green hadn’t made an absolute howler and Heskey and Wright-Phillips had finished their chances, England would have won 3-0 and I would be celebrating the fact that World Cup glory was almost guaranteed!

Error

I suppose we need to look at the negatives first. I have long felt that Rob Green is the third best of the three England goalkeepers. He doesn’t have a presence and he simply doesn’t have the shot stopping ability of the other two. I hate to say ‘I told you so’ but that error was one that shouldn’t be made in the park on a Sunday morning, let alone in a World Cup.

Ledley King lasted just forty-five minutes and his fitness, which has always been a concern looks to have let him down. OK, this is a groin injury and not his knees, but even so, the man is simply not fit. He was replaced by Jamie Carragher who has just had his worst season for many years and was absolutely roasted by Jose Altidore on the one occasion he was tested.

Confidence

Aaron Lennon looked short of confidence and failed to be direct in the way that he can be so effective. On the other flank we had James Milner who was clearly not fit and shouldn’t have started. He lasted just thirty minutes and picked up a yellow card. It was a mistake to start him. He was replaced by Shaun Wright-Phillips who has a remarkable knack of running down blind alleys.

Up front we had Emile Heskey, who was excellent, but still couldn’t score in a brothel if he had a hundred pounds in his pocket, and Wayne Rooney who only touched the ball about half a dozen times.

Solid

On the positive side, we were pretty solid defensively and Glen Johnson, John Terry and Ashley Cole all looked comfortable.

Steve Gerrard and Frank Lampard played OK together, perhaps as well as they have done, and we created a few chances. Gerrard took his goal well and when we played through the middle rather than going wide we looked quite dangerous.

Stubborn

We have to keep things in perspective and a draw against the USA is not a disaster. We should win the other two group matches and progress to the knockout stages. The only thing that worries me slightly is that Fabio Capello, who is a great manager and is doing a wonderful job as England boss, has a stubborn streak and may stick by his guns.

David James must come in to replace Green and we have to get Lennon playing in a more direct way. Well as Emile Heskey did, we need to play Rooney as a striker with Steve Gerrard operating in free role just behind him. Joe Cole must come in to play on the left and Gareth Barry should partner Lampard in the middle.

Fear

I fear that come next Friday evening we will see Rob Green, Emile Heskey and Shaun Wright-Phillips in the starting line-up and Joe Cole left in the cold. I hope that isn’t the case.

Overall I am disappointed with the result but I am no less confident about England’s chances of success than I was before the game. The problem is that I’m not sure how confident I was.

Consider yourselves lucky that Altidore’s shot that Green also got a hand to hit the post, otherwise yall’d be in yet ANOTHER disgraceful position.

This match shows how far we’ve gone, even if we didnt win. Tim Howard is definitely one of the top five keeper’s in the world. His work against Spain showed that, his saves against England proved it.

Jon, I agree with your Green statement. Give the lad another go and see how he does. If not I’d say pop in Hart. He was great in the EPL this past season. I know there have been concerns about his experience, but the World Cup is where the next great players emerge. Who knows, he might be the next Buffon. Anyway testing out Hart in the next two games would be much better than in say the second round where England could face a Germany or Ghana.

As for Heskey, he was actually probably one of the better players for England. However, once Crouchy came on I think he did whatever Heskey could do just a little bit better. Having said this I think neither of them work very well with Rooney. Ideally I’d say Captain Fantastic (who was by far England’s best player last night) would play just behind Roo. The two play well together and are supposedly pretty good pals, which would really help the lack of chemistry up front. This would obviously leave Barry and Lampard patrolling the center.

On a completely different note, England’s left side needs work. Shawn and Milner simply didn’t do enough. Joe Cole needs to play there. He would also help what I thought was a lack of creativity in the English side. And although Lennon didn’t have a fantastic game, I’d say he’s just nervous and will get better as the Cup progresses.

Overall they just did not live up to expectations. Many in England are saying they didn’t take their opportunities which is true, but neither did the US on several occasions. They did not dominate the game like they were supposed to. England will not win the World Cup. However, I do think they have enough skill for a decent showing of fourth place. All in all, not bad.

Also, I’m not sure if any of you are aware, but today Jürgen Klinsmann stated that he thought US/Everton keeper Tim Howard was one of the top five keepers in the world.

Jon, I agree that Heskey played well but I just think we are too one dimensional when we play him as a target man. I also think that if we are going to do well we just can’t carry a striker who can’t score.

Personally, i DO hope we have Green and Heskey in the starting line up for the next match, although I would agree Joe Cole is a better option than Wright-Phillips if fit.

Green isn’t a keeper that makes a lot of mistakes. People seem to forget that he basically saved England against Mexico.. we don’t have a truly great keeper in this country at the moment, but the other options are an ageing, very much error-prone James and a very inexperienced Hart. Anyone watching Green week in, week out will know that its extremely rare for him to make a mistake. If he is dropped, he may aswell go home as his confidence would be shot. Thats not an option to me.

Heskey was one of Englands better players, yet you want him dropped too? Ok so we all know his finishing is… best leave this sentence unfinished. But he linked up play well, was a perfect target man, and he set up our goal!

Lets not forget we played well enough, and would have surely won easily if we took the chances we created, we certainly had enough. Green was not the only player to make a mistake in that match, and if only alot of the other players had linked up as well as Heskey did, it would have been very different.
