  • The Italian league kicked off this week with wins for Milan, Juventus, Lazio, Genoa, Palermo and Sampdoria. The league looks like being its usual cagey and tight self as no game was won by more than the odd goal.

Milan will be happy with their start. A Pato double giving them a 2-1 win at Siena and Sampdoria also had an away win with Gastaldello scoring the winning goal in their 2-1 win at ten man Catania three minutes into time added on.

Champions Inter were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Bari. Eto’o opened his account for his new club from the penalty spot but Kutuzov rescued a point for the visitors.

  • Bundesliga
  • Bayer Leverkusen, Hamburg and Schalke lead the way in Germany with seven points from their three games.

Hamburg produced the surprise and possibly the performance of the day by giving champions Wolfsburg a rude awakening with a 4-2 win at the champion’s home ground. Petrec and Castelen scored late goals after Wolfsburg had fought back from being 2-0 down.

Leverkusen had an emphatic 5-0 win at SC Freiburg with Barnetta and Derdiyok getting a couple each.

Schalke were held to a 0-0 draw at Hoffenheim.

Bayern Munich continued their slightly worrying start to the season going down 2-1 at Mainz. That leaves them in fourteenth place in the table with two points from three games.

  • Ligue 1
  • Bordeaux sit proudly at the top of the French table after a comfortable 4-0 win over Nice gave them three wins out of three. Gourcuff scored twice for the leaders with Jussie and Diarra getting the others.

Lyon, PSG and Marseille are hot on their heels with PSG and Lyon recording good away wins whilst Marseille could only manage a 1-1 draw at Rennes.

  • Eridivisie
  • Feyenoord and FC Twente lead the way in Holland with PSV and champions AZ Alkmaar just behind.

Goals from Ruiz and Nkufo gave Twente a 2-1 win at home to RKS Waalwijk, whilst Feyenoord were easy 4-0 winners over Roda JC.

PSV survived the sending off of Rodrigues to record a 3-1 win over NAC and AZ looked like champions again as an own goal and one from El Hamdaoui gave them a 2-0 win at Heerenveen.

  • SPL
  • Only three teams in the SPL have won both of the games they have played. Hibs are one of them after they won 3-1 at Falkirk. I wonder if you could guess who the other two are?

Yes, that’s right, Celtic hammered St Johnstone 5-2 with Marc Antoine-Fortune and Shaun Maloney getting two each, whilst Rangers had a more difficult game, winning 2-1 at Hearts thanks to an injury-time penalty by Kris Boyd. This was certainly a fiery match and had more to do with bad tackles and confrontations than it did to football. Rangers had ten men for all but thirteen minutes after Kevin Thomson was sent off for a foolish lunge.

Falkirk and Hearts join Hamilton, defeated 3-0 at home to Aberdeen, as being the sides at the bottom with no points to show for their efforts.

  • Portugal
  • Braga are the only team left in Portugal with a 100% record after just two games. Their 2-1 win at Sporting courtesy of strikes from Alan and Meyong sees them sitting proudly at the top of the table.

Porto got back to winning ways but it took them until the 65th minute when they were given a penalty and two Nacional players were sent off, to take the lead. They went on to beat the nine men 3-0.

  • Greece
  • The Greek season started with Panathinaikos recording a comfortable 3-0 win at Ergotelis. PAOK, AEK and Olympiacos didn’t play.

  • Turkey
  • Galatasaray made it three wins out of three and remained at the top of the league after they beat Kayserispor 4-1. Fenerbahce have also got a 100% record but they have played only two games.
