Is Bellamy’s top flight career finished?

Craig Bellamy is without doubt one of the most controversial stars to grace the Premier League.

He is opinionated, annoying and frustrating at times. What cannot be faulted is his talent. He also has a tremendous will to win.

He was one of the in-form players of last season, yet Manchester City are discarding him like an old sock. The news that he could be joining Championship side Cardiff City seems very strange to me.

The Bluebirds are struggling financially and would surely struggle to pay Bellamy’s wages. Even Cardiff boss Dave Jones has cast doubts over whether the club could be able to attract the striker to Wales, but has admitted he would like Bellamy at his club.

Drop

The move would also be a big drop in playing standard for the Welsh striker. In my opinion he is far too good a player to drop down into the second tier of English football.

According to reports City are blocking a move by Tottenham to sign the striker, because they are one of City’s rivals. Spurs boss Harry Redknapp is still attempting to bring the striker to White Hart Lane, but City would prefer him to move to a team that don’t pose a threat to them this season.

Potty

Although it seems a crazy move it’s just the sort of thing an unpredictable character like Bellamy would do. The guy is nuts and he could cause an argument in an empty room. Bellamy would see a move to Cardiff as returning home but surely he isn’t ready to give up life in the top flight just yet?

An initial loan deal may mean he will just play for Cardiff while he is waiting to join another top flight club in the January transfer window. Who knows what’s going on in his head?

The 31 year-old has already said he would consider quitting football if City leaves him out of their Premier League 25 man squad, which now looks certain. I never thought that he would quit he still has too much to give. It would be a waste of his talent to just walk away from the game.

Determined

I believe that Craig Bellamy is far too determined to just quit playing football at the top level. If he moves to Cardiff then he will be even more determined to make it back into the Premier League. He is the sort of character that likes to prove people wrong and likes to get one over on people who annoy him.

Unlikely

For all the talk of Cardiff City signing Bellamy on-loan I just can’t see it materialising. I can see Bellamy staying in the Premier League. I’m sure somebody in the top flight will secure his signature.

Bellamy has also been linked with Fulham and Everton. New Fulham boss Mark Hughes has a good relationship with the Welshman and is keen to add to his strike force. He has yet to add to his squad since taking over and will be hoping Bellamy will be his first big signing.

Ghost

Despite City’s reluctance to sell Bellamy to rivals, my best guess is that he will end up at Tottenham before the transfer window shuts on 1st September. And if Bellamy has anything to do with it he will come back to haunt City later this season.
