Is there any loyalty left in Football?

This week feels a bit like groundhog day. Players asking for transfers, heads not being right and players getting their own way.

I know football is big business now but do any of these players feel any loyalty to the clubs they represent? This summers transfer speculation has become boring because of so many whining players.

Wicked

At times these players seem to treat their clubs like a girl they have had their wicked way with and then just want to discard without due cause.

Surely they feel some sort of emotion tie to the clubs that they have called home for years?

Loyalty

A lot of people may say that football is just a business now and footballers are just trying to earn the best living they can for themselves and families. They are just people and the majority of us fans are out to get the best for ourselves.

However if I compare these unfaithful footballers to ‘normal’ people they just look greedy. In my former-life as an educator I absolutely hated my job at times but I still felt a sense of loyalty to my colleagues and pupils.

Most football players don’t seem to have the same emotions about the football clubs they represent. Surely they must feel loyalty to those fans that they appear in front of every weekend?

Money

Of course most of us fans don’t earn the crazy amounts of money that footballers do. I look at footballers situations sometimes and think there’s only so much money you can spend. There are only so many houses, Porsches and villa’s you can own.

Surely these footballers realise how lucky they are? They should be grateful for the opportunity they have been given and stop acting like toddlers who haven’t had their nap if they don’t get their own way.

Tedious

Some of these long running transfer sagas can get really tedious e.g., Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona. These situations just serve to irritate the fans of the selling club, usually. Even some of the fans of the buying clubs can get frustrated by these long drawn out deals.

Talk

Not only do footballers decide they want to move at the sniff of a tad more money they sometimes decide to declare in the press that they wish to leave their current club. There is nothing more annoying as a football fan than one of your heroes coming out and saying he wants to leave your club.

It feels like a betrayal of the worst kind. Footballers must realise how the fans feel they were once young supporters at a stadium somewhere. It just seems like they now live in a completely different world to the rest of us.

Purist

I am a football purist and believe that footballers should have some sort of passion for the game. I know there is a lot of pressure on players playing at the highest level but surely they should enjoy playing the game?

A lot of players in the Premier League seem to think it’s a burden playing the game which has given them such a good lifestyle. There are however millions of fans around the world who would gladly take their place playing the game they love.

You make a good point Dylan but if you look at the names of those players you mentioned most of them are in their thirties.

    Loyalty is now dying out.

Fabregas had loyalty. He stayed at Arsenal longer than he would have liked and gave his all for them. His boyhood club who trained him and he worshiped was Barca though. If given the chance I’m sure all of us would want to play for our favorite clubs especially if they trained us when we were young. And you can hardly blame Fab for wanting to leave Arsenal with the kind of managment they have. How many trophies have they won in the past few years? How many have they even come close to winning? Arsenal and Wenger should never blame players for leaving when they refuse to buy the good/necessary players and don’t win trophies. As far as loyalty goes look at: Gerrard, Giggs, Scholes, Totti, Del Piero, Xavi, Puyol, Messi, ect…

just hope that rising footballers can be loyal to their club as the likes of Del Piero and Giggs, or at least be grateful and thankful for their time there, and not whining to move. If you’re going to move, move for a challenge, for progress, not for the money…

I dont think clubs or clubs worth the loyality. Come to think of it, when the player gets to 30s, do the clubs keep them. Do they cont to keep them considering their had works when they were in 20s. Is rear cases especialy if the player is a citizen. Take Jay Jay Okocha for example. Did Bolton consider his roles & strip him off the captincy & sold him. When he helped hull city gain promoted, did they take him along to premiership? KANU was also furstrated out of Asernal. There are lots of examples. Football is busines, i think players need to take advantage of it & make money cos wen they go down, none remembers their efforts
