John Barnes backs Philippe Coutinho for Arsenal or Chelsea

John Barnes has suggested that Philippe Coutinho would be a good signing for Arsenal or Chelsea in the summer transfer window.

The former Liverpool star believes that Coutinho’s playing style would fit in at Arsenal or their Premier League and London rivals Chelsea.

The Brazil international attacking midfielder is on loan at Bayern Munich at the moment, and the 28-year-old is scheduled to go back to his parent club Barcelona after the Champions League place.

The former Liverpool ace, who can also operate as a winger, has won the Bundesliga with Bayern already this season, and could clinch the Champions League title with the Bavarian giants this Sunday.

Barnes said: “It is an exciting watch with what is going to happen with Philippe Coutinho this summer, they are many teams that are wanting to sign him. I don’t think Tottenham would be interested, as I don’t know if the way that José Mourinho likes to play will suit him, as he likes the ball and having a lot of possession, whereas Mourinho doesn’t necessarily play that way.

“Arsenal could be the best club with the style of football they play. Chelsea could be another good match, because of the way Frank Lampard sets up his team, so with that in mind, Arsenal or Chelsea would be the best solution for him.

“I don’t think he will go to Manchester City to be honest. Pep Guardiola would be able to get the best out of him but there are often times that he has been in a successful team already, and he hasn’t been able to show off as much as he would like.”

Back to the Premier League?

Coutinho was a huge success during his time at Liverpool, and there was no surprise when Barcelona came calling for the Brazilian in 2018.

However, the 28-year-old has failed to make a huge impact at Camp Nou, which is why he was sent out on loan to Bayern in the summer of 2019.

The former Inter Milan ma knows the Premier League inside out, and given that he is 28 years of age and is at the peak of his powers, he would make Arsenal or Chelsea a better and stronger team.

Although the Gunners are rated at 8/11 favourites by Betfair to sign Coutinho this summer, with Chelsea to play in the Champions League next season, the Blues could have the edge over the Gunners.
