Frank Lampard still believes that he and Steven Gerrard can work together in England’s midfield.
Despite faltering performances from the Three Lions when the pair have played alongside each other the Chelsea man thinks that he can work well with the Liverpool man at the heart of the team.
He told a press conference ahead of the national sides’ game with Kazakhstan on Saturday,
“We (He and Gerrard)have been playing at a high level for our clubs and people expect the same for
England and it does not always happen.â€Â
This has led to many commentators and fans claiming that one of the pair must be dropped to improve the teams performances but the midfielder claims that those critics are looking not just too deeply into the midfield ‘problem’ but also focusing blame to squarely on the shoulders of England’s central partnership.
“It is very important to talk about the team. We can look into the wrong issues. We are breaking it
down much too much. The Croatia performance shows that when we play as a team, that is what is important.â€Â
That was a game which Lampard played and Gerrard missed through injury.
“I’m not trying to find issues with certain players. We haven’t really done quite what we could do over the last couple of years.
“My view is that it is very important to talk about the team – it is not about individualsâ€Â,
And it looks as though the terrible twosome will be given another chance to prove their worth once more in the World Cup Qualifier this weekend.
England must win this game comfortably to avoid a predictable backlash from the national press and manager Fabio Capello insists that the Wembley crowd can do it’s bit to lift the team. He told a press conference,
“Now that we have some of that crucial confidence back, I am sure that starting on Saturday, it will be easier for the players to perform to the best of their ability and that the Wembley crowd will generate a big atmosphere for the team.â€Â
I am pretty sure that England will win this game comfortably, check out the latest betting to check the prices but a flutter on an England win must surely be safe money, even in this current climate?
If England somehow manage to drop points in their next two games against Kazakhstan and Belarus though, surely no matter what the performance questions will be raised over the pairs ability to play together.
