Palmeiras stay behind in Brazilian championship

Palmeiras suffered a big blow in their efforts to win the Brazilian Serie A, having suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat by Fluminense on Saturday.

‘Flu’ have been having a disappointing season but de Rio outfit showed different class against Palmeiras.

Carlinhos netted the opener after fifteen minutes and an own goal from Martinez doubled the home side’s advantage close to the half hour mark.

Palmeiras had their remaining hope taken away by Junior Cesar, who scored Fluminense’s third just before the interval.

As a result, Palmeiras now trail leaders Gremio by four points.
