Luis Suarez scored a 100th-minute equaliser for Sporting CP as they drew 1-1 with Primeira Liga leaders Porto.

Seko Fofana’s 76th-minute strike looked to be the winner for the home side at the Estadio Do Dragao, but Suarez scored on the rebound from his own penalty miss deep into stoppage time as the gap between the top two sides in the league remains at four points.

It was a quiet first half, to say the least, with neither side managing a shot on target. Alan Varela went closest before the break, firing wide of the right post with a first-time shot from the edge of the box.

The second half largely followed suit as Ivan Fresneda’s shot in the 57th minute, which was easily held by Diogo Costa, was the only attempt on target before the deciding moment from Fofana.

After Sporting failed to clear their lines from a cross, Victor Froholdt, Alberto Costa, Fofana and Deniz Gul all saw shots from inside the box blocked before the Ivorian midfielder managed to finally get his effort through the wall of defenders, and Rui Silva could not keep out the strike.

Porto looked set to take a huge step toward winning their first league title since 2021-22, but Francisco Moura was penalised for handball in the final minute of stoppage time, and though Costa denied Suarez from the spot, the striker scored into an unguarded net on the rebound.

Data Debrief: Sporting snatch a point at the buzzer

In the end, Sporting produced 1.29 expected goals (xG) from 11 attempts to Porto’s 0.77 from eight shots, but both of those figures were heavily boosted by the build-up to each of their goals.

But a late winner is not out of the ordinary for Sporting. They have now scored 15 goals in the last 15 minutes of league matches this season, the most of any team in the Primeira Liga.

Porto, meanwhile, are now unbeaten in their last 10 home matches against Sporting in the league (W5 D5) but have won just one of their last six, with five of those ending in a draw.
