Portuguese goalkeeper Quim is to be replaced in the Euro 2008 squad after injuring his right hand in a training session, Portuguese media reported team doctor Henrique Jones as saying Saturday.

Quim, of Benfica, sustained the injury in training on Friday and he and Jones travelled to a Geneva clinic on Saturday to determine if he could stay on in the 2004 finalists' squad.

“Quim took a blow to his right hand, which he fractured,” the Lusa news agency quoted Jones as saying.

“Even if the injury is not that serious it prevents the player from being able to retain his place and he will have to be replaced.”

Portugal are therefore drafting Nuno Espirito Santo of Porto, Germany's SID sports news service reported from the Portuguese camp.

Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari will field Ricardo of Spanish side Real Betis in his side's opening group game Saturday night against Turkey with inexperienced Rui Patricio on the bench.
