The Estádio Municipal de Braga plays host to a compelling Europa League first leg on Thursday night as Portuguese contenders Braga welcome Bundesliga side Freiburg.

With either Nottingham Forest or Aston Villa awaiting in the final at Beşiktaş Park in Istanbul on May 20, both teams know this tie represents a rare opportunity to reach a major European showpiece.

Braga

Fifteen years after falling short against domestic rivals Porto in the Europa League final, Braga are preparing for just the second European semi‑final of their history. The Arsenalists booked their place in the last four earlier this month by edging past Real Betis 5–3 on aggregate, confirming their credentials in a competition where they have impressed throughout the campaign.

Braga have recorded seven victories from their 12 Europa League matches this season, drawing three and losing just twice. Their run included five wins during the league phase to finish sixth in the newly expanded 36‑team format, followed by a dominant 4–0 home victory over Ferencváros in the round of 16. Under the guidance of Carlos Vicens, formerly Pep Guardiola’s assistant at Manchester City, Braga have combined organisation with efficiency, keeping a competition‑high seven clean sheets.

European success has contrasted with a more frustrating domestic campaign. Inconsistent league form has left Braga drifting away from the Primeira Liga’s leading trio, and defeat to Santa Clara last weekend means they are now 16 points behind third‑placed Sporting Lisbon with only three matches remaining. A seventh fourth‑place finish in nine seasons now looks likely, further sharpening their focus on continental competition.

That singular focus could play to their advantage. Braga enter the semi‑final unbeaten in their last four home matches against German opposition, winning three and drawing once, and they have kept clean sheets in three of their five European games at the Municipal Stadium this season.

Team News

Injuries remain a factor, however. Diego Rodrigues, Sikou Niakaté and Adrián León Baršić are ruled out, while Florian Grillitsch is a doubt after picking up a knock against Santa Clara.

Gabriel Moscardo is suspended, opening the door for Leonardo Lelo or Paulo Oliveira to slot into the back three alongside Gustaf Lagerbielke and Vítor Carvalho. At the other end, Rodrigo Zalazar leads Braga’s scoring charts with 23 goals in all competitions and is expected to start alongside Pau Víctor and club captain Ricardo Horta, who has already contributed four Europa League goals this term.

Freiburg

Freiburg are navigating uncharted territory, having reached their first semi‑final in a major European competition after steadily growing under head coach Julian Schuster. The Breisgau‑Brasilianer finished seventh in the league phase, level on 17 points with Braga, before dismantling Genk 5–2 in the last 16 and storming past Celta Vigo 6–1 in the quarter‑finals.

That emphatic triumph was labelled a “very historic moment” by Schuster, who has repeatedly stressed the need for focus as Freiburg chase further milestones. His side’s domestic form has dipped, however. A narrow DFB‑Pokal semi‑final defeat to Stuttgart was followed by a heavy 4–0 Bundesliga loss away to Borussia Dortmund last weekend, leaving Freiburg eighth in the table and just outside the European qualification places on goal difference.

Away form in this competition is a concern. Freiburg have won only two of their last nine Europa League road games, drawing three and losing four, and they have failed to score in three of their last four such fixtures. Earlier this year, they lost two of their last three away matches without finding the net, a pattern they will be desperate to reverse.

Their only previous competitive outing in Portugal came during the 2013–14 Europa League group stage, when they played out a goalless draw with Estoril. A similar result on Thursday would be viewed as a positive outcome ahead of the return leg in Germany.

Team News

In terms of availability, Patrick Osterhage remains sidelined with a knee injury, while Max Rosenfelder is still recovering from a hamstring problem. Jordy Makengo missed last weekend’s defeat to Dortmund due to a thigh issue and faces a race against time to feature, with Christian Günter ready to continue at left‑back if required.

Vincenzo Grifo leads Freiburg’s scoring charts with 13 goals in all competitions and shares top spot in the Europa League scoring race for the club with Yuito Suzuki, both having netted four times. Along with Niklas Beste and central striker Igor Matanović, they are expected to spearhead Freiburg’s attack in Braga.

Conclusion

Both sides arrive eager to put domestic disappointments behind them, and neither will lack belief in what promises to be a tight first‑leg battle. Freiburg’s recent exploits suggest they are capable of troubling any opponent, but Braga’s defensive resilience and home record may tilt the balance.

In a contest likely decided by fine margins, the hosts may just hold the edge as they seek a slender advantage before next week’s return leg.

Verdict: Home win
