Inter Milan and Real Madrid will lock horns with each other in Italy in the Champions League this week. The Group B match is slated to kick off at 8pm UK time on Wednesday at San Siro in Milan and promises to be a cracking game of football.
Inter Milan
Inter are struggling in the Champions League at the moment and are in danger of not getting through to the knockout stages. Antonio Conte’s side are currently at the bottom of the group with just two points from three matches. A defeat to Madrid at home could see their hopes of playing in Europe’s premier club competition in the New Year dim.
The Nerazzurri, though, will head into the match against Zinedine Zidane’s side high on confidence. Inter got the better of Torino 4-2 at home in Serie A on Sunday, with star striker Romelu Lukaku scoring twice. Against a Madrid side who themselves are far from imperious at the moment, former Chelsea manager Conte will be confident of picking up all three points at San Siro.
Team news:
Aleksandar Kolarov, Marcelo Brozovic and Daniele Padelli will not feature for Inter as they all are self-isolating. Milan Skriniar and Stefan de Vrij should start for the home team.
Real Madrid
Real Madrid were expected to win Group B with ease, but the 13-time European champions are not finding it easy at all. Zidane’s side are third in the group at the moment with four points from three matches, level on points with second-placed Shakhtar Donetsk and a point behind leaders Borussia Monchengladbach.
Madrid will head into the match against Inter in Milan on the back of a 1-1 draw with Villarreal away from home in La Liga. It followed a 4-1 hammering by Valencia in the league before the two-week international break. The defending Spanish champions are now fourth in the La Liga table with 17 points from nine matches, six points behind leaders Real Sociedad, who have played 10 games.
Team news:
Madrid have been hit hard with injuries ahead of the match. Sergio Ramos is out and so is Federico Valverde, while Luka Jovic will not play after testing positive for coronavirus. Karim Benzema is sidelined as well, but Casemiro is set to start.
Key Factors to Consider
- Real Madrid have scored seven goals in three Champions League games.
- Inter Milan have scored four goals in three Champions League games.
- Real Madrid have conceded seven times in the Champions League this season.
- Inter Milan have conceded five times in the Champions League this season.
- Real Madrid won 3-2 against Inter Milan in the reserve fixture earlier this month.
Conclusion
Neither Inter nor Madrid have looked particularly great or impressive in the Champions League so far this season. It will be a good game of football, and the home side are likely to edge it by a one-goal margin.
