Premier League predictions – Chelsea to all but wrap up the title?

SoccerNews predictions

Saturday 1st May

  • Birmingham v Burnley
  • Nothing left to play for other than the financial reward of finishing as high as possible for Birmingham and pride for Burnley.

These two sides came up from the Championship last season with great hope but a realistic fear of facing the drop. Birmingham have adapted to life at the top really well and have more than held their own, sitting comfortably in the top half. I’m afraid it has been a very different story for relegated Burnley.

For Burnley to rescue what is left of any pride they would need to end the season with two great results. They aren’t going to get one here.

  • Manchester City v Aston Villa
  • Defeat for either team here may well mean the end of hopes of a top four finish and Champions League qualification. A draw, and they could be ruining it for each other. Certainly Tottenham will be watching the result of this game with a huge amount of interest.

City have never quite looked confident of achieving their aim and Villa have stuttered and stumbled but remain in with a chance.

I have a feeling that it could be Martin O’Neill running up and down the City of Manchester Stadium touchline and jumping for joy after this one.

    SoccerNews prediction: 1-2

  • Portsmouth v Wolves
  • This dire season drags on for Portsmouth who just want the Cup Final to come around so that they can have a great day out and get this season over with.

Wolves are safe and Mick McCarthy has done a great job with a limited side. They may find next season to be even harder. For now, they can relax and play some football with a smile on their face and show us what they can do.

    SoccerNews prediction: 0-2

  • Stoke v Everton
  • Tony Pulis will be looking for his side to bounce back from the absolute mauling they were given at Stamford Bridge last week. He will also be keen for a show of unity after reports of dressing room unrest. Currently in thirteenth place, they will be looking for a top half finish to show how far they have come as a genuine Premier League outfit.

Everton still have a tiny chance of European qualification although that is out of their hands. They will be feeling a little sad with where they are in the league because they will know that they would have been in the battle for fourth if they hadn’t suffered such damaging injuries in the first half of the season.

Neither team will be too disappointed with a point.

    SoccerNews prediction: 1-1

  • Tottenham v Bolton
  • If Tottenham have any belief that they can finish fourth they need to win this one. It is the easiest of their remaining games and simply must produce three points.

Bolton are safe, which is a pretty good effort from Owen Coyle and his players and they can now relax and play some football. Tottenham on the other hand, need to win however it happens. Harry would love them to play flowing football and win handsomely but a scrappy 1-0 with a disputed penalty would do him at the moment!

    SoccerNews prediction: 1-0

    Sunday 2nd May

  • Fulham v West Ham
  • A London derby between two teams who have had contrasting seasons.

Fulham have been fantastic in Europe and not far behind that in the league. West Ham have been poor and have stayed in the top flight by the skin of their teeth.

Fulham seem to be doing their thing on a sound financial basis whilst West Ham are heavily in debt and will need to sell players and maybe lose their manager.

I fancy the better team to win this one.

    SoccerNews prediction: 2-1

  • Liverpool v Chelsea
  • This is a tough one to call because although Chelsea are clearly a much better side than Liverpool, the reds will be at their very best against them in this one.

This is the game that will probably decide the Premier League champions. A Chelsea win and they will be crowned whereas any other result would probably hand it to Liverpool’s hated rivals Manchester United.

If Chelsea win, get ready for the conspiracy theories!

    SoccerNews prediction: 1-2

  • Sunderland v Manchester United
  • More potential fuel for the conspiracy theorists in this one as Steve Bruce takes on his old boss and his old club in a crucial game for them.

Sunderland have nothing to play for but that might make them quite dangerous.

United have all the experience and all the quality to make sure they get what they need from the game.

    SoccerNews prediction: 0-2

    Monday 3rd May

  • Blackburn v Arsenal
  • Blackburn are looking for a top half finish and to end the season with just three home defeats. That is quite a remarkable performance when you look at the torrid start they had.

Arsenal’s title hopes have gone and if they don’t pick up any more points they could still lose third place to North London rivals Tottenham. That isn’t going to happen but defeat here would certainly leave them a nervous few days.

Blackburn are the type of physical side that Arsene Wenger and his team simply hate playing against so a home win is not an impossibility. I don’t think it will happen, but it could be an even money bet.

    SoccerNews prediction: 0-1

  • Wigan v Hull
  • A pretty poor Wigan side who just survived, against a very poor side Hull side who didn’t.

It won’t be a spectacle that’s for sure.

    SoccerNews prediction: 1-0
