Premier League predictions – more gloom for Sunderland and West Brom as the big four march on

I handed over the prediction duties to my nineteen year old son last week after a spell of only getting one or two right each week. He stepped in and got three right. A bit better, but hardly staking a claim to take over from me though!

It’s back to me this week and I have a feeling I might just get them all right this time!

Saturday 6th December 2008

  • Arsenal v Wigan
  • The hardest team to predict. They play great football. They have great players. They beat Manchester United and Chelsea. They lose to Stoke and Hull. How can anyone truly say they know how Arsenal are going to perform?

Wigan are sitting in mid-table following a couple of home wins. They are a decent outfit and they will try to make things hard for Arsenal by getting lots of players behind the ball. I don’t think it will work.

    SoccerNews prediction: 3-0

  • Blackburn v Liverpool
  • Blackburn are in a mess. Having dropped into the relegation zone, Wednesday night’s footballing lesson from Manchester United reserves won’t have helped them.

Liverpool are top of the league yet some of their fans booed them from the pitch after last week’s draw against West Ham. They aren’t playing well and they do miss Fernando Torres. They’ll still have too much for a dispirited Blackburn.

    SoccerNews prediction: 0-2

  • Bolton v Chelsea
  • Bolton are flying high in ninth place and their 4-1 win at Sunderland has left them in great spirits.

Chelsea have lost twice at home and struggled away in Europe. Strange as it may seem, Bolton might actually be feeling more confident than Chelsea at the moment.

Chelsea are too good and too strong to slip up here however. Don’t forget, in the Premier League, their away record is played seven, won seven.

    SoccerNews prediction: 0-2

  • Fulham v Manchester City
  • Fulham are a whole lot better than they were last season. I love Murphy and Bullard in the midfield. They work hard and play the game in the right way.

Manchester City are probably not better than they were last season at the same stage, despite all the investment and the change of manager. They do play some great stuff though and I can only see them getting better, starting from here.

    SoccerNews prediction: 0-1

  • Hull v Middlesbrough
  • Hull go from strength to strength and Middlesbrough go from great performance to dire performance.

After two away draws at Portsmouth and Stoke, Hull will fancy their chances of picking up three points at home.

After defeat to Bolton and a draw with Newcastle, Middlesbrough are due a good performance.

    SoccerNews prediction: 1-1

  • Manchester United v Sunderland
  • The fact is that Manchester United are a very good side and Sunderland, at the moment, are not.

With United closing the gap on Chelsea and Liverpool and Sunderland heading downwards there can surely only be one result here.

I was going to say that stranger things have happened than Sunderland winning this game, but I couldn’t think of any!

Some teams have a positive reaction when a manager leaves, but not many of them are faced with a trip to Old Trafford! On the positive side for Sunderland, they know that they can’t defend any worse than they did last week.

    SoccerNews prediction: 4-0

  • Newcastle v Stoke
  • I don’t think this game will be one for the purists. Newcastle are battling to get out of trouble and won’t care about being pretty as long as they get the points. The way Stoke play is effective and well documented.

I don’t think there’ll be a lot of goalmouth action in this one and I can see both sides being relatively pleased with a hard fought point.

    SoccerNews prediction: 0-0

    Sunday 7th October 2008

  • Everton v Aston Villa
  • Probably the two teams with the best chance of breaking in to the top four. On their form this season, Aston Villa seem the more likely, but Everton have managed to creep into seventh position without setting the world alight at any stage.

Difficult one to predict, but then again they all are for me!

    SoccerNews prediction: 2-1

  • West Brom v Portsmouth
  • West Brom can’t buy a win and Portsmouth had a great draw with Milan and the confidence boost of their first home win under Tony Adams last week. Despite their defeat on Thursday and their exit from Europe, they will be fairly confident.

This game should be entertaining as both teams like to get the ball down and play.

I think West Brom will still be looking up at the rest after this one.

    SoccerNews prediction: 0-2

    Monday 8th October 2008

  • West Ham v Tottenham
  • West Ham got a great point at Liverpool last week after winning at Sunderland to bring an end to their poor run of results.

Tottenham are still going well under Harry Redknapp and look a totally different side to the one he inherited.

Should be a full bloodied London derby and I expect it to be tight.

    SoccerNews prediction: 1-1

I too believe that Arsenal might go lopsided during this match. Hopefully they can pull themselves together. Time to watch the game 😀 Arsnl vs Wgn
