Premier League preview: Liverpool v Wolves

Life does not get easier for struggling Wolves, with the bottom-place side travelling to Anfield on Wednesday to play resurgent Liverpool.

After slumping to a 2-1 loss to Wigan at Molineux on Boxing Day, Mick McCarthy’s men now sit at the bottom of the English Premier League, one point adrift of West Ham and Fulham.

Liverpool began the season in turmoil with wrangling over the club’s ownership hovering over their worst ever start to a Premier League season, a crisis so bad they were sitting in the relegation zone in late October.

But since the arrival of new owners New England Sports Ventures, the club has slowly started to arrest their form slump and have climbed to 10th place on the table, securing a berth in the last 32 of the Europa League in the process.

Liverpool have turned their season around on the strength of their form at the fortress of Anfield, and have won their last four league games at home, conceding only one goal while scoring 10.

In their last match, however, they slumped to a 3-1 loss away from home against Newcastle before their Boxing Day fixture with Blackpool was postponed because of a frozen Bloomfield Road pitch.

Wolves certainly have their injury concerns ahead of the tussle, with midfielders David Jones, Karl Henry and long-term absentee Adlene Guedioura all out, while Steven Mouyokolo and Michael Mancienne are doubtful.

Jody Craddock’s hip complaint will keep him out until the New Year but in good news for McCarthy, skilful winger Matt Jarvis made his return from a groin injury in the Wigan match as a substitute and will be better for his 35 minutes on the park.

Roy Hodgson has little injury concerns, and although club stalwart Jamie Carragher is out until February with a dislocated shoulder, captain Steven Gerrard has recovered from a hamstring injury that kept him out of the past four league games.
