Shakhtar Donetsk have won the very last edition of the UEFA Cup final, and also became the first Ukrainian team to win a European trophy. Werder Bremen were beaten 2-1 after extra time.

The match at Istanbul’s Sükrü Saracoglu stadium was entertaining from the start, with possession easily shifting from one side to the other.

It was Shakhtar to take the lead after 25 minutes, as Luiz Adriano flicked the ball past keeper Tim Wiese for 1-0.

But Werder then began to gain strength and spent more time on the opposing half. The reward came ten minutes after the opening goal as keeper Pyatov did get his hands to a free kick from Naldo, but the shot was simply too powerful for the goalie to keep it out of his goal.

No more goals were scored in regular time but Shakhtar needed only seven minutes in extra time to restore their lead. A pass from the right wing was well met by Jadson, and although Wiese almost parried the ball, it went on to roll past the goal line for 2-1.

Although the Germans did try to get the equaliser, Shakhtar held on to take the trophy and become the first team from Ukraine to win a continental final.
