Rene Meulensteen has suggested on talkSPORT that Manchester United should sign Harry Kane from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer transfer window.

The former United first-team coach believes that Kane is the type of striker that United need and not a player like Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho.

According to The Guardian, the Red Devils are interested in signing the former Manchester City prospect in the summer transfer window and are close to a deal.

It has been reported that the Premier League giants will pay Dortmund an initial transfer fee of £90 million plus a further £18 million in performance related add-ons.

The 20-year-old winger will reportedly earn £250,000 per week as salary at Old Trafford, with Betfair rating his chances of making the transfer this summer at 1/33.

Former United first-team coach Meulensteen has said that due to the Red Devils’ creativity from midfield, they do not need a player like Sancho, but they could do with a striker like Kane who is prolific.

Meulensteen said on talkSPORT: “They’re bringing Jadon Sancho in, but more than anything, I would have gone for a more prolific out-and-out striker, somebody like Harry Kane.

“There is so much creativity coming from midfield with [Bruno] Fernandes, [Paul] Pogba, [Marcus] Rashford, [Anthony] Martial… they can all contribute to goalscoring.

“But [they need] somebody in the middle who’s going to score 25-plus goals. That will close the gap for United.”

Stats

According to WhoScored, Kane scored 18 goals and provided two assists in 29 Premier League matches this past season, and scored 17 goals and provided four assists in 28 league games in 2018-19 for Tottenham.

Sancho scored 17 goals and provided 16 assists in 32 Bundesliga matches this past season, and scored 12 goals and provided 14 assists in 34 league games in 2018-19 for Dortmund, according to WhoScored.
